“Mr. Credit Union” Reaches 50 Year Milestone as Board Director

May 18, 2021, Prince George, British Columbia – Founding family member of Spruce Credit Union, Len Thony, celebrated his 50th year as a Board Director at the 70th Annual General Meeting last week.

Thony’s credit union journey began in 1951, when his parents were involved in the formation of a small Catholic credit union, Sacred Heart, the beginnings of Spruce Credit Union.  Thony soon joined as the credit union’s 268th member and became a Director at 20 years of age. Throughout the years, Mr. Thony always put the interest of the members first and ensured the safety and soundness of the credit union in his roles as Chairman for 34 years and as Vice Chair for an additional 11 years.

Many well-wishers shared their congratulations including Shirley Bond, Prince George-Valemount MLA noting Thony’s ‘incredible accomplishment and act of dedication and hard work for the benefit of the credit union’ and Lyn Hall, Mayor of Prince George thanking Thony ‘…for your commitment, not only to Spruce Credit Union, but to our community.’

As a tribute to Thony, the credit union announced at this year's AGM that the Boardroom will now be named "The Len Thony Room”. Reg Foot, Board Chair, offered his thanks and said Thony ‘is a great mentor, his leadership is astounding and on behalf of the entire board, we are so honored to be at the Board table with you.’

Finally, Thony shared his comments about 50 years at the Board table. “My journey with the credit union feels a bit like raising a child. I started in 1969 when there were very few dollars on deposit and today I am so proud of the Credit Union and how far we’ve come. Thank you to the members for providing your support over the years and to my wife, Dorothy, for understanding my desire to be a part of the growth and success of the Credit Union.” Thony intends to continue his role as 2nd Vice Chair on Spruce Credit Union’s Board of Directors.
